Published in June 2008 by Running Light Press, Centennial captures the essence of life aboard the 102-year-old Great Lakes steamboat St. Marys Challenger. This 240-page coffee table book contains over 300 images including both archival and contemporary material. To explain the images, Winters wrote a short and cheeky narrative on the significant historic and economic impact this unique vessel and other "lakeboats" like her have had during a century of trade on the Inland Seas. This book is the culmination of five years of boat chasing and living and its pages are filled with the author's passion for both the Great Lakes and her boats. Here are what others have said about his work:
"Few engine-driven cargo ships in history have merited the adjectives 'graceful' or 'beautiful,' which is why the end of the era of the 'lakers' that carried coal, ore, grain, cement and other cargoes on the Great Lakes from the end of the age of sail to the time of today's shapeless bulk carriers and barges is so sad. The stirring sight of a passing laker, heavily laden and low in the water with its scant freeboard exaggerating its long profile, flaunting its elegant counter stern and proud bow, is endangered and will soon be extinct. All the more fortunate then that we have Chris Winters' Centennial as an enduring record, in carefully researched words and splendid images, of the longest-living steam-powered laker of them all. Winters describes himself as boatnerd and camera geek, but you need be neither to appreciate this remarkable tribute to a ancient survivor that still qualifies as graceful and beautiful."
-Bill Schanen, Editor and Publisher, SAILING Magazine
"Without a doubt the best literary/photographic account of lakes shipping that I have ever seen, written from the heart of a true boat lover."
-Paul LaMarre III, Executive Director of the Museum Ship S.S.Willis B. Boyer
"Never has the career of a single laker been documented with such passion and attention to detail. Winters' skill as a photographer and ship historian is unparalleled..."
-Roger Lelievre, Editor and Publisher Know Your Ships
"An unprecedented photographic journey across time aboard a remarkable Great Lakes freighter. Beautiful perspectives ranging from you-are-there on board shots to panoramic, gull's-eye views. Chris Winters has artfully captured the twilight years of this one-of-a-kind vessel."
-Art Chavez, Barkhausen Award winning Great Lakes author and researcher
"Winters has created a rich pictorial tribute to this venerable ship. With Centennial, he has brought all of us aboard for a trip down Memory Lane. Great history, great photography...what a treat!"
-Pat Labadie, Great lakes author, historian, and exhibit designer
